The deputy director of elections for the National Democratic Congress, Rashid Tanko Computer, has denied assertions that his party deliberately fixed deplorable roads on election day in the Akwatia constituency as a means to hoodwink voters into voting for them.
His denial comes on the heels of allegations by some residents in the constituency that the governing party sent road construction equipment to parts of the constituency to reshape their roads to make them usable a few weeks before the September 2, 2025, by-election.
On the day of the election, multiple videos on both mainstream and social media captured moments a grader was busily levelling sections of the deplorable roads in some communities in the constituency.
However, Tanko Computer, in an interview on JoyNews, insisted that local authorities put the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment to good use to improve the road network in the constituency for constituents.
He explained that this was done purely to make the roads in some communities, which the erstwhile administration allegedly abandoned for 8 years, motorable, but not to influence the voting patterns of the voters.
"The DRIP equipment was only put to good use by the assembly…We have done enough for them. The people are living testimonies. They are telling us what they used to buy in the market, but now the prices have been slashed drastically."
NPP, NDC trade vote-buying allegations at Akwatia
He added that the people decided to vote massively for the NDC due to the government's good initiatives and programmes that have purportedly ameliorated the plights of the citizens and also given them hope.
He said the ability of the government to reduce prices of goods and services has made it possible for constituents to save from their earnings, saying, "they have a lot more money in their pockets. They are enjoying these things, so why would we need to use money to induce them?"
The NDC's Bernard Bediako Baidoo won the election with 18,199 votes to defeat the NPP's Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who obtained 15,235 votes in the fiercely contested by-election.
