DISASTER DURBAR

A durbar has been held at Nkwakwaakrom number four near Akwatia in the Eastern Region to climax this year's celebration of National Disaster Reeducation week, Speaking at the ceremony the District Chief Executive, Mr.. Korankye Addo said most disasters are unforeseen but at times people's attitude towards the environment causes disaster. He urged the people who are predominantly small scale miners to make efforts to reclaim the land, in order to prevent disaster. The MP for Akwatia, Mr.. Mohammed Erzuah Siam said the Sopong River which was diverted close to the township as a result of mining activities by the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Company, will be redirected to avoid flooding. He advised the people to plant trees to serve as wind breaks during rainstorm. The Acting District Fire Officer, Mr.. J.D. Adjartey advised the people to form fire volunteer squads to carry out educational programmes on the dangers of fire disasters and the degradation of the environment.
