Video Shows Banned At Duakwa

The chief of Agona Duakwa Nana Kojo Amuakwa V and his elders have banned commercial video show operators from plying their trade in the town with effect from 17 June 2001.

The directive which came after a meeting at the chief's palace is meant to control youth immorality and to enable school pupils concentrate on their school work and use their free time for more productive extra curricula activities.

The chief and his elders noted that the films shown by commercial video operators are mostly ones that appeal to the base passions of the youth and will therefore not be beneficial to good character formation of young people.

In another development, the chief and his elders have commended youth leaders of the town who have initiated two days a week communal work to help improve sanitation at Duakwa. This initiative which began about two weeks ago is marshalling youth energy into a positive force for the town's development.

Until the initiative, response to communal work had not been encouraging because some youth leaders were disappointed at the inability of the chiefs and his elders to eject the Zongo community from the town after communal violence broke out between Zongo and indigenous youth about three years ago.

However, now the youth and elders are cooperating to the extent that a day's communal work sometimes attracts about 500 people.
