Children's fund raises GH¢2.3 million for helicopter crash victims' families

The Children’s Support Fund, established by President John Dramani Mahama to cater for the welfare of children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has accrued GH¢2,315,000.

Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, Dr Valerie Sawyerr on August 19, 2025, noted that the initiative is already enjoying strong support from corporate Ghana.

President Mahama announced the creation of the Fund during the state funeral for the eight individuals who died in the crash, stressing that it would provide long-term support for the children left behind, including their education and general well-being.

The government expressed appreciation to Stanbic Bank Ghana for its seed donation of GH¢500,000, as well as to companies such as Procus GH Limited, GB Foods Ghana, Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd, Sage Distribution Ltd, Quantum Oil Terminals, Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd, Newgas Cylinder Ltd, and Quantum Terminals PLC for their contributions.

She encouraged further donations through Stanbic Bank Ghana (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra):

She added that cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to CHILDREN SUPPORT FUND 6825 and, in the spirit of accountability, a list of donors will be published weekly.

The August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Murtala Muhammed, and six others, including three crew members.

A state funeral was held on August 15, attended by President Mahama, government officials, security personnel, traditional leaders, and grieving families.
