President meets house leadership

President J. A. Kufuor on Wednesday held a historic informal meeting with the leadership of Parliament at the Osu Castle in Accra.

The Majority delegation, which was led by the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Papa Owusu Ankoma, included Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu, MP for Tafo-Suame; Mrs Eugenia Kissi, MP for Tarkwa-Nsuem; and Mr Abraham Aidoo, MP for Tema West.

The Minority side was led by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, MP for Nadowli South. Other members were Mrs Comfort Owusu, MP for Mfantsiman East; and Mr Doe Adjaho, MP for Avenor.

The meeting was also attended by the First and Second Deputy Speakers, Mr Freddie Blay and Mr Kenneth Dzirasah respectively. Speaking at the meeting President Kufuor underscored the need for political parties to join hands with the government in the interest of the development of the country.

He said the 1992 Constitution made provisions for the principles of checks and balances as the best method of promoting accountability in governance to sustain multi-party democracy.
