The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, has reaffirmed his commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
He stated that he remains resolute in the fight against illicit mining despite his new role as the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines.
Dr Ashigbey, who is also the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, explained that his current position at the Chamber presents him the opportunity to intensify his advocacy for responsible and sustainable mining practices in the country.
According to a citinewsroom.com report on June 11, 2025, he emphasised that his new position would allow for more coordinated efforts, within the mining industry to address the prevailing challenges and promote best practices.
“There is an alignment between the Chamber itself and actors in the space to ensure that stakeholders mine sustainably. So, I am not sure that much will change. I am just hoping that my colleagues on the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey would also step up to the plate and take some of the responsibility,” he said.
Dr Ashigbey indicated that the Chamber would serve as a strategic platform for stakeholder engagement and policy advocacy.
He noted that future engagements with major players in the mining sector would likely be channeled through the Chamber.
“The only thing that you might see happening a lot more is that, by virtue of the opportunities given to me, a lot of the engagement with the stakeholders will be using the Chamber as the vehicle,” he indicated.
