A CDD Research Fellow in Public Health, Dr Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, has raised concerns about the possibility that the report from the committee that probed the alleged assault incident at Ridge Hospital could be flawed.
The committee set up by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the alleged assault on a nurse at the Ridge Hospital found no medical evidence to support claims of a shoulder dislocation.
Ridge Hospital Assault: Committee report contradicts nurse's claims
Presenting its findings to the minister on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, the committee stated that Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, a rotation nurse at the hospital, reported her injuries a day after the incident, which occurred on August 18, 2025.
According to medical records reviewed by the committee, there were no signs of a fracture in her left wrist or a dislocation in her right shoulder joint.
The committee noted, however, that the nurse was treated, given pain relief medication, advised to rest, and placed under psychological support care.
Explaining the basis for his view that the report may be flawed, during an interview on Channel One TV on August 27, 2025, Dr Sarpong Asiedu, noted that individuals of high caliber at Ridge Hospital who witnessed the incident were invited to testify.
He questioned the findings, asking whether all these individuals truly presented a different narrative, as the committee’s report suggests that the assaulted nurse did not sustain fractures, contrary to earlier claims.
“… There's one thing I am concerned about. I am a health professional and I always say something about professionalism. When a judgment is made of your peers, and what do i mean by your peers? Look at the composition of the committee. There were doctors, nurses, lawyers with health legal basis and health communicators on it. There was a director at the Ghana Health Service on it [committee].

“They encompass all the facets that need to make a determination on this matter. But then I say, what if the committee was fudged because the health minister wanted a particular outcome? Next, I go and look at the testifiers, those who appeared and they are named in the report,” he said.
He concluded saying:
“There were details on their house officers, their nurses. So, I asked myself, would all these people conspire to tell a particular narrative? And I struggle to see how that can be. They say that the health ministry can fudge the committee and fudge the testimony of the people who appeared. One thing I'm glad about is that in this particular report, nothing is redacted. Everything has been put out there. So, I can read it and make a policy standpoint and independent assessment,” he added.
