New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo has said DCOP Angwubutoge Awuni’s death is a major blow to Ghana because he was one of the “principled officers” in the Service.

The Eastern Regional Police Commander died Monday dawn after an illness at the Police Hospital in Accra. He had brushes with political authorities when he was alive following his forthrightness, a situation which allegedly forced his transfer from the national police headquarters as a spokesperson to a district commander.

He was later brought back to Accra to head the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) before being moved to the Eastern region as the commander last December.

Commenting on DCOP Awuni’s passing, the three-time flagbearer of the main opposition party in Ghana tweeted: “Saddened by the news of ACP Awuni's death. Condolences to his family; may he rest in peace. Ghana has lost a fine, principled Police Officer.”

DCOP Awuni was an accredited member and a Council Member of the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana.

The seasoned law enforcement officer had been with the Police Service from 1980 and held various positions in the Police Service ranking from Director of Public Relations, District Police Commander, Divisional Police Commander, Regional Police Commander and Commanding officer-MTTU.

Mr. Awuni held an M.A in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA, a Diploma in Journalism from GIJ and had rich experience in United Nations Missions Abroad with experience in countries such as Namibia, Bosnia and Sudan.
