Attorney General drops charges against Volta ‘separatists’

Volta Region became part of Ghana after a Plebecite Volta Region became part of Ghana after a Plebecite

Seven members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation, the group seeking autonomy in the Volta Region (Trans -Volta Togoland) have been bonded to six months’ good behavior by a Ho Circuit Court

This was after the Attorney General filed a motion at the court to drop treason and felony charges against them.

The group had been calling for the secession of the Volta Region and other parts of the Northern and Upper East Regions from Ghana to become what they term as the Western

They argued that history references do show that residents of the Western Togoland voted to become a union with the Gold Coast (now Ghana) but the union had not been established up till now and even though Ghana opted to be a unitary state under the 1956 referendum.

At their last press conference in February, which result in their arrest, members of the group called for the declaration of Western Togoland, which stretches from Kulungugu in the Upper East Region to Keta in the Southern coast by the Atlantic Ocean, as a sovereign state.

“The time is now to execute a common plan of action to come out of serfdom as some wise men and women did before under various autocracies the world over. Our wise men and women are again ready to strategise for the formula for coming out of the serfdom sooner than later. This congress is the launch pad for the missile attack at all fronts for independence. Whether it is here now, today, tomorrow is matter of choice that must not be delayed, but pursued vigorously,” Charles Kormi Kudjordjie, chairman of the group argued.

It is clear if the group would still continue to fight for their so-called Independence after being freed by the courts.
