Assin Wurakese chief rescued after alleged 'abduction'

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the safe recovery of the Chief of Assin Wurakese, Nana Professor Okogyeaman Ameyaw Dankwa Okokroko, following reports of his alleged abduction on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

According to a report by Angel FM, a group of four armed men dressed in military camouflage and wearing face masks stormed the chief’s house around 5:30 a.m., breaking down the main gate after ramming it with their pickup truck, registration number GN-833-24.

The men, later identified as National Security operatives, entered the compound and took the chief away, causing heightened tension within the community, with residents expressing concern for his safety.

A report by citinewsroom.com noted that the Central North Command of the Ghana Police Service, upon receiving information about the incident, launched an intelligence-led operation. This led to the interception of the Mitsubishi pickup truck transporting the chief at Asamankese around 9:05 a.m.

Nana Professor Okogyeaman Ameyaw Dankwa Okokroko II and the operatives, who identified themselves as National Security personnel, were subsequently detained.

According to the Central North Regional Police Commander, the operatives explained that they had picked up the chief to assist with an ongoing national security investigation. The chief was later handed over to a formal team from the National Security Secretariat on Tuesday, following a request.

Meanwhile, the regional commander assured the public that the matter is being handled professionally in the interest of public safety and national security, and urged the community to remain calm.
