The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has explained why the government has not yet begun implementing its promise of automatic postings for newly trained nurses.

According to him, the government inherited a backlog of trained nurses who have completed their programmes but are still awaiting posting, with some batches dating as far back as 2020 and 2021.

Speaking on UTV's Adekye Nsroma on September 22, 2026, he said the government’s immediate priority was to clear the outstanding backlog before extending automatic postings to newer batches of nursing graduates.

Baidoo further noted that at the time the promise was made, President Mahama was not aware of the backlog of unposted nurses.

“Currently, we don’t want to post the 2025 batch. We want to clear the mess the previous government left, the backlog of unposted nurses. When we are done, we will start the automatic posting,” he said.

The lawmaker said the government intended to resolve the backlog and commence automatic postings within its four-year term.

He further argued that the problem was not limited to nurses, claiming that the backlog in the teaching profession was even more extensive, with some trained teachers having remained unposted for years.

"When it comes to the posting of teachers, it is worse. There are unposted batches from 2016. You clear the mess before you start automatic posting,' he added.

President John Mahama, while campaigning ahead of the 2024 general election, promised to restore automatic postings for nursing students upon graduation.
