Akosua Serwaa, the German-based wife of the late highlife music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu , also known as Daddy Lumba, and a sister of the deceased, Ernestina Fosu, have raised concerns about the true cause of death of the late artiste.

In a statement dated Tuesday, October 13, 2025, on behalf of the two women, they demanded an independent probe into Daddy Lumba’s demise, noting inconsistencies in narrations around his death.

The legal debate surrounding Daddy Lumba's funeral

“The family of the late Charles Kwadwo Fosuh (Daddy Lumba), a 60-year-old German citizen of Ghanaian origin, is calling for an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death in Ghana on 26 July 2025,” the statement said.

The statement recounted three different narrations on the death of Lumba, including accounts from an eyewitness, a police coroner report, and the account of Priscilla Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, a woman with whom the late musician bore five children and has been recognised by his extended family as his official widow.

“An eyewitness reported that on the night of the incident, the late Mr. Fosuh called a friend to come to his residence. Upon arrival, the friend was prevented from seeing him by a woman living with Mr. Fosuh. After waiting for nearly two hours, he left. On his way home, he received a call informing him that Mr. Fosuh had died at home,” the statement said.

On the account given by a Ghana Police Service Coroner at the District Magistrate Court in Accra, the statement said Lumba died after experiencing severe pain following a scan at the Sunshine Diagnostic Centre, where he had been taken for an MRI scan.

"A report from the Ghana Police Service to the Coroner at the District Magistrate Court in Accra stated that Mr. Fosuh, a known diabetic, complained of pain in his legs and waist on 24 July 2025 and was taken to the Sunshine Diagnostic Centre for an MRI scan. Due to agitation and fear, he was placed under anaesthesia. After the scan, he developed severe pain and was transferred to the Bank Hospital, where he died on 26 July 2025,” the statement noted.

On the account given by Odo Broni, the statement said while she had initially informed Lumba’s family that the musician died at the Bank Hospital where he was sent for medical attention, she later gave a different narration to a cousin of Lumba the next day.

“Ms. Priscilla O. initially informed the family during the first family meeting that Mr. Fosuh had been taken to the Bank Hospital, where he received an injection that caused him severe pain before he passed away. However, the following day, when Kwasi, a cousin of the late Mr. Fosuh, approached her with the same question, she gave a different account - stating that Mr. Fosuh had actually died at home, and that she had cleaned and dressed the body before calling a friend, identified as Serwaa A., to assist her in taking him to the hospital. Since then, Ms. Priscilla O. has declined to provide any further information, and her statements remain inconsistent and contradictory,” the statement said.

Based on the three accounts, which Akosua Serwaa and Ernestina Fosu described as contradictory, the statement said the two have formally contacted the German authorities based on Lumba’s German citizenship and have also called on the Ghana Police Service to question Odo Broni and Lumba’s manager to ascertain the facts around his death.

“These contradictory versions have left the family deeply concerned and distressed, raising serious questions about the true cause of death and whether proper medical and investigative procedures were followed.

“The family, represented by Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh (widow) and Ms. Ernestina Fosuh (sister of the deceased), has formally contacted the following authorities seeking assistance:

* The German Embassy in Accra, Ghana

* The Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt - BKA) in Wiesbaden, Germany

* The German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) in Berlin.

“The family is also calling on the Ghana Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to question Ms. Priscilla O. and Mr. Philip Kwabena A. (also known as Roman Fada) to assist in uncovering the truth about the death of their loved one, Mr. Charles Kwadwo Fosuh,” the statement said.

It added that the family has also gone ahead to submit relevant documents to aid in the probe.

“The family has submitted all relevant documents - including medical reports, official correspondence, and a confirmation from Transition Funeral Home regarding the handling of the remains - and continues to appeal to both the German and Ghanaian authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent, and independent inquiry to determine the exact cause of death,” the statement said.

The aftermath of the death of Lumba, which occurred on July 26, 2025, has been characterised by litigation between Lumba’s first wife, Akosua Serwaa, and his sister Ernestina Fosu on one hand, and the extended family of the musician as well as Priscilla Ofori on the other.

Daddy Lumba's lawyers challenge Akosua Serwaa's claim over marriage

In a previous statement, Akosua Serwaa accused Lumba’s family of seeking to deny her rights as his widow and questioned the legitimacy of Odo Broni as a wife of the late musician.

She has since filed a lawsuit seeking recognition of her rights, while Lumba’s family have issued a statement recognising Odo Broni as the only and rightful widow of the late musician.
