The Times reports that the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has initiated steps to recover its parcels of land at Baakoniaba, a suburb of Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region, which had been encroached upon by some developers. In a front page story headlined: SSNIT recovers lands lost to encroachers", the Times says the SSNIT on Wednesday and Thursday, demolished over 51 houses situated on the encroached land to enable the construction of affordable workers' flats to go on unhindered. The paper says 20 of the houses were inhabited, 15 were up to lintel level while 16 were at the foundation and other levels. GRI

"Embargo on Cuba is wrong - President", is the headline of another front page story in the Times which says President Rawlings has said Ghana viewed the United States economic embargo against Cuba as morally wrong. President Rawlings said Ghana was against any law that violated non-interference in the internal affairs of another state and the right of all nations to determine their own path of social development. According to the Times, the President said this when he opened the Africa-Cuba Solidarity Conference at the University of Cape Coast. GRi

A back page story of the Times says the Achimota railway bridge in Accra which was closed to traffic last June following damage caused by floods, was re-opened yesterday. The Times says the closure led to the stoppage of train services between Accra-Kumasi and Accra-Takoradi. The bridge was reconstructed at a cost of 220 million cedis by the Ghana Railway Corporation and the Ghana Highway Authority.
