Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed suggestions that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intends to make Ghana ungovernable following the arrest of some of its members.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GTV Ghana and monitored by GhanaWeb on May 26, 2026, on the matter, Afenyo-Markin explained that while the party will continue to use constitutional tools to express its concerns, it has never threatened to destabilise the country.

“To make the country ungovernable?? I've not said that. NPP as a party hasn't said that. I mean, with respect. I'm saying that we are part of the governance ecosystem. It would be an overreach for a political party like ours to say that the country would be made ungovernable. I mean, within the context of what is happening, I don't think that that is what the party has said,” he said.

He cited the Abronye case as an example of judicial prejudice, noting that ordinary citizens could easily conclude that certain comments made by a judge suggested bias.

“In the Abronye case, for instance, the ordinary person, when properly explained to him, would come to a conclusion that if the judge made this comment, and these were the preliminary actions of the judge, then indeed this judge should not be the one to sit for the full trial, because obviously he is prejudiced,” he explained.

The Effutu MP emphasised that Parliament would continue to rely on constitutional mechanisms to ensure rights are respected.

“As Parliament, we will use the constitutional tools we have to drum up the need to ensure that rights are respected. That is not to say that as a party we are equally endorsing excesses of certain actions of our members,” he clarified.

He also questioned the fairness of security agencies, pointing out that activists who constantly criticise former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former President Nana Akufo-Addo have not faced similar arrests.

“If indeed the security agencies are looking at it with a fair eye, with a fair mind, then why have they also not been arrested?” he asked.

When asked what's next for the NPP, he responded, "Oh, as for what is next, we have said publicly that we would use the tools available in the constitution to drum home our concerns."
