Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has reaffirmed the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to rebuilding and strengthening its base as it prepares for life in opposition, following high-level engagements with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and party leaders in the Ashanti Region.
In a post shared on his X page after a visit to Kumasi on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Afenyo-Markin disclosed that he held discussions with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace on issues affecting the country and on Ghanaians' expectations.
“On Sunday, 24th May 2026, I had the singular honour of an audience with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at his Royal Palace in Manhyia, Kumasi. Our discussions centred on pressing governance matters facing our nation and how best to meet the aspirations of our people,” he wrote.
The Effutu MP later met with the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party, where discussions focused on national issues and the role of the Minority Caucus in Parliament.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the meeting provided an opportunity to tap into the experience and guidance of senior party figures as the NPP charts its path in opposition.
“I was humbled by the wealth of wisdom and experience in that room,” he stated.
He added that the discussions centred on “key national issues of concern and the work of the Minority NPP Caucus in Parliament,” noting that he had sought the elders’ support to help strengthen the party’s direction and engagement with supporters in the region.
“I called upon their wisdom and guidance to strengthen our resolve, sharpen our strategy, and deepen our engagement with the people of the Ashanti Region,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin also expressed appreciation for the advice received from the party elders, stressing his commitment to maintaining close collaboration with them.
“I am deeply grateful for their counsel and remain committed to working in close partnership with them in the service of our party and our nation,” he wrote.
The Minority Leader used the opportunity to rally party members, describing the Ashanti Region as a vital pillar of the NPP’s political strength and democratic tradition.
“The Ashanti Region remains a cornerstone of our party and a beacon of our democratic values,” he noted.
Calling for unity among party faithful, Afenyo-Markin urged members at all levels to remain focused and committed despite the challenges of opposition politics.
“As we navigate the challenging times we face in opposition, I call on every NPP faithful, from grassroots activists to constituency, regional and national executives to stand firm, stay united, and trust in the strength of our collective purpose,” he said.
He further expressed confidence in the party’s future under the leadership of its flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, saying the NPP would continue to scrutinise the government while positioning itself for a return to power.
“Together, under the leadership of our flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, we will continue to hold the NDC government accountable and return to office to serve Ghana with distinction,” he stated.
