The Member of Parliament (MP) for Efutu Constituency in the Central region, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin and the Central Regional Minister Kwamena Duncan appear to be on a collision course over happenings at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), has observed.

Whereas the lawmaker stated on his facebook page that the institution following days of protests by aggrieved students has not been closed down as earlier reports suggested, the Minister who is also Chairman of Central Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has countered the claim.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin who was part of delegation that held an emergency meeting at the North Campus to find a solution to tension that was enveloping the institution on Thursday attended by the Minister of Education Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Vice Chancellor Reverend Father Prof Anthony Afful-Broni, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong, Chief of Winneba Osabarima Neenyi Neity, and Registrar of the UEW revealed the university had not been closed down.

He posted on his Facebook page “I am happy to inform all students that REGSEC has ordered the immediate reopening of the university. All UEW students are free to remain in the various halls of residence. The police have been duly informed hence no student will be prevented from entering campus. I urge all students to be law abiding.”

But in a sharp rebuttal, the Regional Security Chairman denied the claim by the lawmaker insisting the institution has been closed down and will remain so until a decision is arrived at.

“That decision was taken based on sound security judgment, it is not possible when we’ve gone to the campus in the morning to announce the closure of the school, in the evening of that same day we’ll turn round and say the school has reopened. No such announcement has been made and it there will be any such announcement it will come from the person who announced the closure.”
