The immediate past Member of Parliament (NPP) for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been assaulted at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, one of the 19 polling stations for the ongoing rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North constituency.

Videos of the incident that have gone viral show that the former NPP MP, who also served as the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, being subjected to severe beatings by thugs.

The videos showed the thugs storming the polling station and overcoming the police officers there.

The thugs hit Hawa Koomson, which forced her to fall. The videos showed the thugs kicking the former MP while she was on the ground and dragging her.

The whole polling station turned chaotic with men in plain clothing having a go at each other.

Some of the policemen at the scene and some other men believed to be the security detail of the former legislator, however, managed to rescue and whisk her away.

Reports indicate that the thugs attacked the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP after she sprayed pepper spray on them, after they demanded that she leave the polling station.

A number of bystanders, including journalists, were also on the receiving end of some of the blows that were being thrown around.

Following the incident, a number of extra policemen were deployed to the centre to calm the situation down.

Leading figures of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are also at the scene of the incident, trying to calm things down.
