The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has provided a list of flood-prone areas and corresponding shelter safe havens in the capital during this rainy season, especially in case of flooding.

The flood-prone areas include Lartebiokorshie, Osu, Bubuashie, South Odorkor, Mpoase, Korle-Bu, Arena, Legon, Dansoman, Mataheko and North Kaneshie.

All these areas have corresponding shelters they could access in the event of floods.

The AMA’s announcement comes on the heels of Monday’s heavy rains that resulted in the death of at least nine people in Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions.

George Ayisi, Public Relations Officer of the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM Thursday, 21 June that: “Nine people lost their lives in the rains on Monday.”

In Accra, 32-year-old Dr Aya Hayfron got swept away by the floods and eventually lost her life. Her body was retrieved on Wednesday.

In the Volta Region, a grandmother and her two grandchildren were electrocuted in the floods.

Mr Ayisi said it is important sanitation laws are enforced in order to curb flooding in the city every year.

“You go round and see that people have built on water ways simply because they have the money to put up the building. That is wrong, I think the laws must work, we must implement the laws in order to deal with the floods.”

Parliament, he said, is considering an Act that will empower NADMO to demolish buildings.

“When parliament approves the Act, NADMO will have the power to bite and demolish building and we will do that,” he said.
