The Minority Caucus has warned that the continuous press prosecution of past appointees by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, led by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General (AG), Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, is an affront to the constitution.
The caucus is calling on higher authorities to immediately call the AG to order. Addressing members of the Parliamentary Press Corps, John Darko, Legal Advisor to the Minority Caucus and Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame, stated that Dr Ayine's public utterances regarding high-profile cases he is handling clearly violate Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 constitution, which details fair trial. "The AG, by his press prosecution, has prejudiced this all-important constitutional provision," Darko said.
The caucus argues that the continuous media trial of people still being investigated for alleged offenses creates an erroneous impression that the suspects are guilty before the courts pronounce them guilty or otherwise.

"The AG has turned upside-down the manner of establishing criminal jurisprudence from 'innocent until proven guilty' to 'guilty until proven innocent'," Darko noted, citing, Hannan Abdul Wahab and his wife, Chairman Wontumi, Kwabena Adu Boahen, Osei Assibey and Gifty Oware as examples of individuals who have been pronounced guilty in the court of public opinion by the AG.
Dr Ayine has been updating the public on high-profile cases through the government's accountability series. This these series, he has publicly pronounced some of the suspects as belonging to a criminal syndicate. However, the Minority believes that his actions are tainting the judges and the facts of the cases.

"In our jurisdiction, judges sit as both the trial of law and facts, and these judges live among us, attend social gatherings with us, and are exposed to the same media discussions. By the AG's continuous press conferences on these cases, he is tainting our judges and the facts of these cases," Darko revealed.
The Minority is urging the AG to follow through on all cases involving NDC appointees, such as Dr Ato Forson and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiamah.
"An accountable government should follow through and collect all the money from all these people. He is not being accountable – he is just engaging in populism and politics to destroy the integrity of people," Darko noted.
