Statesman and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has cautioned religious leaders, particularly of the charismatic faith against making what he described as unconstitutional pronouncements on Ghana’s presidency.
His warning follows recent suggestions from some religious figures that President John Dramani Mahama should seek a third term in office, reportedly based on prophetic revelations.
In a statement titled ‘Religious Leaders Must Stay Within Their Lane Leave Constitutional Matters Alone’, and sighted by GhanaWeb, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe described such suggestions as not only unconstitutional but also divisive and dangerous.
“Let me state clearly and unequivocally: this must not happen, and it will not happen,” he said as reported by citinewsroom.com on July 25, 2025.
He reminded the public that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution imposes a strict two-term limit on the presidency; a provision that is entrenched and can only be changed through a national referendum.
“It can only be changed through a national referendum. Not dreams, visions, or prophetic declarations,” he said.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe warned against what he called ‘pulpit proclamations’ that risk undermining Ghana’s democratic foundations.
He drew historical comparisons with the political instability of the late 1970s, when religious influence during the Acheampong regime contributed to unrest and military takeovers.
According to him, such ‘spiritual overreach’ nearly collapsed the nation once and should not be repeated.
“Ghanaians are looking for serious leadership not theatrical spirituality that distorts truth and sows’ confusion,” he stated.
He also called on President Mahama to respect constitutional term limits and not be drawn into any effort to amend them, noting that protecting his legacy is more valuable than pursuing another presidential bid.
“Ghana’s peace and democratic stability must never be sacrificed for personal ambition or populist spirituality. Enough is enough. Ghana deserves better,” he said.
