A total of 180 Ghanaians have returned home from Libya following an evacuation exercise by the government with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 25, 2026, the returnees arrived in Ghana on Thursday, September 24, 2026, as part of efforts to help vulnerable Ghanaians stranded or seeking to return home.

About 153 males and 27 females, including children and infants, were received upon their arrival by the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Mohammed Lawan Gana, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and representatives of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

They were subsequently welcomed by Ghana, who described their safe arrival as an important step towards rebuilding their lives and further urged them not to see their return as a setback but as an opportunity to start again.

He also encouraged them to make use of available support and consider skills training, entrepreneurship and other livelihood opportunities to help them settle back into their communities.

The Ministry explained that the repatriation forms part of continued cooperation between the Ghanaian government, IOM and ECOWAS to support the voluntary return and reintegration of Ghanaians in vulnerable situations abroad.

The returnees are expected to receive support from the government.
