A video has surfaced showing how a heavily pregnant Nigerian woman was denied entry into the United Kingdom after immigration officials raised concerns about the purpose of her trip and her stage of pregnancy.
This practice is common among some pregnant African women who travel to the United States to give birth because children born there automatically acquire American citizenship.
The woman, who was travelling through London on her way to the United States, came under scrutiny after border officials discovered she was only seven weeks away from her expected delivery date.
Pregnant Ghanaian woman, disabled son, detained for over a week at US airport During questioning, she told an immigration officer identified as Sarah that London was her destination for the day, but she planned to travel to the United States the following day to visit her sister.
The officer also asked whether she had informed American visa authorities about her pregnancy when applying for her visa. The woman admitted she had not.
When asked why she did not disclose the information, she replied: "It didn't come up."
The officer became suspicious of the traveller's intentions, noting that some pregnant women travel abroad to give birth in countries where children automatically acquire citizenship by birth.
Officials further discovered that the woman's return ticket was scheduled for three weeks before her due date, meaning she would have been around 37 weeks pregnant when travelling back.
After reviewing her travel plans, the officer concluded that her itinerary appeared to breach airline regulations on late-stage pregnancy travel.
"She's got three weeks between her return date and her due date, which makes her 37 weeks pregnant, which is over every airline's limit," the officer said.
Although the woman held a valid US visa, immigration officials decided to seek guidance from American authorities before allowing her to continue her journey.
The immigration official, Sarah, subsequently contacted the US Embassy and explained the situation.
"She's at the airport today and she's in an advanced state of pregnancy. So if you can just give them a call and find out if they're happy with that, and if so, then we can let her travel," she said during the call.
Minutes before the flight's departure, the embassy requested to speak directly with the woman and instructed her to visit its office in Lagos with her documents.
"What he'd like to do is, if you can go back to the embassy here in Lagos, show him all this paperwork, and he'll want to speak to you," Sarah informed the pregnant woman, whose identity was concealed.

The woman pleaded with the officer to allow her to continue her journey but was unsuccessful.
As a result, she missed her flight to the United States.
According to the footage, the woman later failed to appear at the American embassy as requested, leading to the cancellation of her US visa.
