President John Dramani Mahama has directed a doubling of the security services recruitment target, ordering that the number of new recruits across Ghana's security agencies be increased from 20,000 to 40,000 over a four-year period.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement released on March 16, 2026, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
The directive followed a high-level meeting held on Monday, March 16, 2026, between the President, heads of security agencies, and the Ministers for the Interior and Defence, during which officials were briefed on the status of the ongoing recruitment exercise.

“Following a briefing on the process, the President has directed that the number of men and women to be recruited to the various security agencies should be increased from twenty thousand (20,000) to forty thousand (40,000) over a four-year period,” the statement read.
Beyond the numbers, President Mahama also issued a firm instruction to the heads of the security agencies to ensure that the recruitment process is conducted with transparency and fairness to avoid the controversies that have allegedly affected security recruitment exercises in Ghana.
The meeting brought together some of the country’s most senior security and administrative officials, including the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of Prisons, Director-General of the Fire Service, Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, and the Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission.
