Oppong Nkrumah raises alarm over 'weaponisation' of state tools

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has raised concerns over what he describes as the growing use of state institutions to intimidate government critics, following recent arrests linked to alleged online misinformation.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on May 22, 2026, Oppong Nkrumah suggested that recent developments point to a troubling pattern of state interference against dissenting voices.

He referenced comments made by President John Dramani Mahama warning that authorities could trace individuals through their IP addresses if they spread false information online.

According to Oppong Nkrumah, subsequent arrests by security agencies appeared to validate fears that state powers were being deployed to suppress criticism and intimidate political opponents.

He specifically cited the arrest of social media commentator, Baba Amando, who he claimed was detained after making a Facebook post involving the President.

“When you see these patterns, it becomes clear that the tools of the state are being weaponised,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

He argued that such actions could undermine freedom of expression and public confidence in state institutions.

Oppong Nkrumah maintained that his criticism of institutions was not an attack on them but rather an effort to defend their independence and integrity.

He also dismissed claims that politicians only defend institutions while in office and criticise them in opposition, insisting he has remained consistent in his views.

To support his claim, he recalled an incident during his tenure as Information Minister when members of his own political party allegedly invaded a television station.

“I was the one who called the Inspector General of Police and reported them. I told him that what they had done was an infringement on media freedom and action had to be taken,” he stated.
