A major traffic gridlock has hit the Ofankor Barrier stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway following a multiple-vehicle crash on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The crash has reportedly left at least 8 persons dead and several others seriously injured.

The collision caused extensive damage to a Sprinter bus, trapping several passengers inside and prompting a major rescue operation by emergency responders.

According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), officers were deployed to the scene to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage and assist those who survived.

One female victim, whose legs were reportedly severed in the crash, was transported from the scene by ambulance for medical attention.

The GNFS described the situation as volatile as officers worked to safely extricate victims from the mangled vehicle in the ongoing rescue operation.

The accident has resulted in significant delays along the highway, with motorists experiencing heavy congestion around the Ofankor Barrier area.

Drivers using the stretch have been advised to exercise caution and consider alternative routes where possible as emergency responders continue their operations.
