Ghanaian author Barima Piesie Okyere-Darko has made a controversial claim about Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah.
In an interview with Channel One TV shared on social media, Barima Piesie Okyere-Darko alleged that Nkrumah misled Ghanaians into believing that his political movement was entirely new.
According to him, Nkrumah relied heavily on propaganda and made Ghanaians believe that the Convention People's Party (CPP) was not formed from the earlier United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).

“He deceived them. In his book, he admitted that he went about spreading propaganda. So he deceived Ghanaians. We were made to believe that Kwame Nkrumah formed a completely new party.
“Kwame Nkrumah stated that he did not want to raise any doubt in the minds of the people that his party was a completely new one. The reason is that he never told the people that he was forming a party that had roots elsewhere,” he said.
Barima Piesie Okyere-Darko further alleged that Nkrumah once claimed that J. B. Danquah and other leading members of the UGCC took bribes from the British, which he said influenced public perception at the time.

“Kwame Nkrumah told the people that their leaders had gone to take a bribe. Ghana’s independence struggle had already gained momentum by 1948, and the records are there. Nkrumah said that J. B. Danquah travelled to the UK to take a bribe.
"He indeed travelled to the UK, but he went to a Pan-Africanist conference. Nkrumah then told the people that the leaders had been given £25,000 each except him. He also claimed he was not forming a new party and that he did not have different ideas. Yet people say Nkrumah had different ideas from Danquah,” he added.
