The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the government will soon introduce a Legislative Instrument (LI) aimed at regulating noise pollution from various sources across the country.

According to him, noise pollution has become a serious concern in many communities, negatively affecting the health and well-being of residents.

“We will introduce an instrument to control noise pollution from various sources. Noise pollution has become a major hazard in our communities,” he said during a press conference on February 3, 2026.

Ayariga explained that excessive noise from loud music and certain religious activities has made it difficult for people to rest, particularly in residential areas.

“People can’t sleep because others are playing loud music or engaging in religious activities, sometimes in neighbourhoods where residents would prefer a quieter environment,” he stated.

The Majority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, cited practices in other countries to support the proposed regulation, noting that religious activities are often conducted in enclosed spaces to minimise disturbance.

“In other jurisdictions, religious activities are carried out in confined spaces so that people outside those establishments are not disturbed,” he explained.

He added that outdoor events must also be organised in a manner that does not infringe on the rights of others to rest.

“There are outdoor events, and the locations of such events should be selected in a way that does not disturb others who want to sleep at that time,” he said.

Ayariga further disclosed that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), acting through the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, will lead the process of bringing the legislation before Parliament.
