The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that several communities in the Accra West Region have been thrown into darkness after flooding caused by the controlled spillage of the Weija Dam submerged some power distribution substations.

In a notice issued on Thursday, May 28, 2026, ECG said the flooding followed the spillage exercise carried out by the Ghana Water Company Limited, resulting in outages across several affected communities, according to a graphic.com.gh report on May 29, 2026.

Areas currently experiencing power cuts include Ashbread, White Cross, Kinshasha, Tetegu, and nearby communities.

According to ECG, the rising floodwaters have submerged some of its distribution substations, making it unsafe to continue operations until conditions improve.

“ECG wishes to assure affected customers that our Engineers are monitoring the situation and will restore supply once the water levels subside, and it is safe to do so,” the company stated.

The development has heightened concerns among residents already battling the effects of flooding in parts of Accra following recent heavy rains and the Weija Dam spillage.

However, ECG apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured residents that engineers are closely monitoring the situation to ensure power is restored.
