The Council for Legal Education and Training (CLET) has constituted a new board comprising senior members of the judiciary, government officials and academics from some of Ghana’s leading law schools and tertiary institutions.

The new board brings together key stakeholders involved in the country’s legal education and professional training, with representation from the judiciary, the Ministries of Justice and Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and major law faculties.

The members of the board are Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie; Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang of the Supreme Court; and Justice Jennifer Abena Dadzie of the Court of Appeal.

Others are Circuit Court Judge, Her Honour Siran Mahama; Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai; and Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Abas Apaak.

The board also includes Deputy Director-General of GTEC, Prof Augustine Ocloo; Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) Law School, Prof Kofi Abotsi; Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof Peter Atudiwe Atupare; Deputy Provost of Lancaster University, Prof Cynthia Forson; and Director-General for Legal Education, Prof Raymond Atuguba.

CLET is responsible for overseeing aspects of legal education and professional legal training in Ghana, including the administration of the Ghana School of Law and other related regulatory functions.

The formation of the new board comes as Ghana continues efforts to reform the legal education sector following the passage of the Legal Education Act.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has previously called for the operationalisation of the legislation and the establishment of the necessary governing structures, arguing that this would provide the institutional framework required to advance reforms in legal education.

The broad composition of the new board is expected to bring different perspectives to the oversight of legal education and professional training.

With senior judicial officers, government representatives and academics all represented, the board is expected to provide leadership across the various areas covered by the legal education framework.

It will now take forward its responsibilities under the framework, including providing oversight for the development and administration of legal education and professional training in Ghana.
