The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has called on Ghanaians to exercise greater responsibility in their public statements, stressing that freedom of speech must be accompanied by accountability.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com on June 10, 2026, the minister said while the government remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of citizens, including freedom of expression, individuals must also be mindful of the impact their words can have on national unity, peace and development.
“We have a country to protect, and we will build our country together. Free speech will be protected under this government and every other government, but we should also be responsible in our utterances and that is all we are asking for,” he said.
According to the minister, safeguarding freedom of expression does not absolve individuals of the duty to communicate responsibly, especially in a democratic society where public discourse can influence peace, unity and national progress.
Sam George defends media freedom but warns against falsehoods
George assured Ghanaians that the government has no intention of undermining constitutional freedoms, noting that freedom of speech remains a key pillar of the country's democratic system.
He further emphasised the need for citizens to contribute positively to nation-building through constructive and responsible engagement in public discussions.
“We have one country, one people and so, be rest assured, your freedom of speech is guaranteed,” he indicated.
