CASTLE CUP: Tanzania shocks Ghana for 3rd place finish

NAIROBI (October 28, 2000 12:03 p.m. EDT www.sportserver.com) - A sour weekend for Tanzania finished sweetly when it shocked Ghana 3-2 at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday to finish third in the Castle Cup tournament.
Tanzania was banned from international soccer Friday due to government interference and will not be permitted to play again until the dispute with world body FIFA is resolved.
The result ended a run of five consecutive losses for the Taifa Stars, although some gloss was removed when Ghana had two players sent off during a stormy second half.
Bilson Abeiku was shown a red card for dissent and substitute Adamu Baba got his marching orders for punching a rival off the ball. Tanzanian Juma Khamisi was dismissed in injury time for disputing a caution.
Although lacking some Europe-based professionals due to club commitments, Ghana was a major disappointment in the $60,000 event, losing 2-1 to Uganda in the midweek semifinals.
Nana Frimpong put the four-time African champions in front after 21 minutes with a diving header, but they quickly lost the initiative to opponents ranked 29 places lower in Africa.
Salvatory Edward levelled via a superb header, Edibily Lunyamila put Tanzania ahead with a crisp left-foot shot before halftime and Mwanamtwa Kihwelu made it 3-1 with 70 minutes gone.
Italy-based defender Issah Rahman reduced arrears for the Black Stars from a softly-awarded penalty deep in injury time on a hot, partly cloudy afternoon in the Kenyan capital.

It took Tanzania's Taifa Stars eight years to gain ample revenge over Ghana's Black Stars whom they beat for the first time yesterday during the Four Nation Castle Lager Cup.

This was a strong signal to the Football Association of Tanzania administrators to get their act together after the news of their being suspended by FIFA was received with bitterness by the players. Taifa Stars were the better side on the day and went onto the rampage and as early as in the second minute, Dua Said who was a permanent thorn for Ghana missed a header from a Maulid Said cross.

Three minutes later, Issa Mohammed hard drive was parried over the bar by Peter Manyika in Taifa Stars goal. In the 10th minute, Boniface Pawasa was given a yellow card by the referee Carlin Alusa for a foul on Nana Arhin-Dua. Manyika who was voted man of the match saved a point blank shot one minute later from Kofi Amoako.

As Taifa Stars kept pressing on, Edibily Lunyamila beat his marker and sent a good cross to Dua Said who failed to connect. Black Stars goalkeeper Constant Mantey parried off a Yusuph Macho shot in the 20th minute.

Black Stars scored first in the 21st minute after Bashiru Gambo floated a well timed cross which Nana Frimpong connected past Manyika. Gambo was on the prowl six minutes later when he looped a tricky ball over the advancing Manyika.

The equaliser for Taifa Stars came in the 32nd minute when Salvatory Edward sent a firm header which beat Mantey in the Black Stars goal from a Lunyamila corner. Three minutes to the end of this half, Lunyamila scored a gem of a goal when he collected a lose ball from the mid-field and rounder off the entire Black Stars defence and his left footer was unstoppable by Mantey.

In the second half, substitute Mwanamtwa Kihwelu scored the third goal in the 69th minute before Black Stars pulled one back from a penalty by Issa Rahman. The referee Alusa lost control of the match in the second half and sent off Baba Adamu and Abeiku Bilson. He also sent off Taifa Stars defender Boniface Pawasa.
