Sydney2000: Ghana's Olympic History

Ghana's first Olympic participation was as the Gold Coast at the Helsinki Games in 1952. That was also the year its Olympic committee was formed and recognised. The country missed the 1956 Games but returned in 1960, when it won its first medal--boxer Clement "Ike" Quartey's silver in the light welterweight division, the first Olympic medal won by a black African. Boxers Eddie Blay and Prince Amartey won bronze medals in 1964 and 1972, respectively. Then, there was a long dry spell--caused in part by the country's boycott of the 1976 and 1980 Games--before the country won its fourth medal, a bronze for football, in 1992.
