Donkor wins E.A. Quaye Tennis tourney

Accra, Sep. 10, GNA - Raymond Donkor of Ghana Police Service defeated fellow counterpart Mohammed Ali 3-0 in the finals to win this year's E.A. Quaye Table Tennis Open Championship played at the Borstal Institute in Accra on Saturday.

The game which started on a fast note saw Donkor pinning his opponent with his dangerous services.

It therefore came as no surprise when he won all the three games played on 11-3, 11-7 and 11-5 sets.

On the way to the finals, Donkor edged out Joe Sam with a 2-0 win while Ali also eliminated Derek Abrefa 2-0. In the Ladies encounter, Akosua Ketu emerged champion by beating Celia Baah Danso 2-0.

The event, instituted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports was meant to honour Mr E.A. Quaye, a retired coach of the National Sports Council for his contribution towards the development of table tennis in the country.

Quaye also won the Africa Table Tennis Championship trophy for Ghana in the year 1962 and 1968.

The event was sponsored by Sqdr. Ldr Ebo Bartels, Chairman of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA). Quaye in an address, said he sponsored the event in order to whip up the activeness of the game which is losing its focus and interest.

Sqr. Ldr Bartels said the closure of the Accra Sports Stadium has affected the training of the players in the country. He said the Association would do everything possible to ensure that Ghana wins the All Africa Table Tennis Championship scheduled for DR Congo in November, this year.
