Mohammed Abu named best player of the year

Ghana midfielder Mohammed Abu has been named Stromsgodset Player of the Year.

The 20-year-old Manchester City loanee made 26 domestic appearances scoring once and played both legs of the Europa League tie against Atletico Madrid.

Abu, who earned his Ghana debut in the 2-0 win over Sudan last month, beat off competition from his compatriot and international team mate goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey and Mohammed Keita to the award.

He also started and impressed in a friendly against Nigeria last month and was a second half substitute in last week’s friendly against Gabon.

Abu told the media: “I’m very happy with this award. I set a target for myself for the season and I am glad I have won this award.

“This means I have to work even harder and go places,” he added.

Abu has justified himself under Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic and will be no surprise if he makes the final cut for the Africa Cup of Nations next year.

Manchester City extended the contract of the former Right to Dream Academy graduate to two years.
