Stephen Appian Donates to Stadium Disaster Fund

The stadium disaster fund received a further donation of 174 million cedis in cash and kind from seven corporate bodies and a foreign based Ghanaian footballer.

Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Minister of Presidential Affairs, received the donations at the Osu Castle.

Italy-based international football star Stephen Appiah, donated three million cedis and the Ghana Chamber of Mines and Ashanti Goldfields Company gave 50 million cedis each.

The Ghana-South Africa Chamber of Commerce, presented a cheque for 34 million cedis, CDH Financial Holdings gave five million cedis and the National Tailors and Dressmakers Association gave two million cedis.

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) presented 20 million cedis worth of assorted drugs and cash whilst Kwatsons Supermarket presented cash and provisions valued at 10 million cedis.

Mrs Elizabeth Joyce Villars, Vice-president of the AGI, said since last Wednesday's disaster which led to the death of 126 soccer fans, members of the association have made various donations totalling over 200 million cedis.

Dr Mogang Phologane, South African High Commissioner, who led the Ghana-South Africa delegation, said their donation was an expression of condolence to the affected families.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey thanked the donors for their immense show of concern. "No contribution is too small since little drops of water make the mighty ocean."

Meanwhile, the Presidential Commission on the disaster chaired by Mr Sam Okudzeto will commence its public sitting on Thursday at the Teachers' Hall at 0900 hours.

A statement signed by Ms Elizabeth Ohene, Government Spokesperson, asked members of the public to give evidence and present memoranda to assist the Commission.

The Commission's offices can be located at Room 18, Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council.
