Willpower gym to host amateur boxing carnival

A three day boxing carnival involving amateur boxers from the Greater Accra Region will take place at the Willpower Boxing Gym located at the premises of City Engineers at James Town from Tuesday June 24 to Thursday June 26.

Napoleon Tagoe, a member of the organising committee said the import of the tournament is to raise a formidable team for the region aside encouraging amateur boxers, by giving them a platform to showcase their talents after long periods of training without competition.

He said so far, 22 clubs have registered to participate in the tournament, which would commence at 1:00 p.m. each day. The clubs include Attoh Quashie, Sparta, Lotto Gold, Akotoku Academy, Wisdom, Sagacious, Black Panthers and hosts, Willpower among others.

Tagoe said there would be prizes for the winner and runner up in every division and a star prize for the best boxer of the tournament and appealed to boxing lovers to patronise the event 'which could become a tourist attraction when it gains grounds and produces high standards of pugilistic entertainment.'

He said, he has invested about three million cedis in the tournament to take care of allowances for referees and judges, rentals of chairs, tables, a ring, lighting system and a public address system and hoped the tournament would attract a corporate partnership in the future.

The organiser said the Guest of Honour at the show would be Mr Solomon Offei Darko, the Metropolitan Chief Executive while they have also sent invitations to Sheik I.C Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister and Nii Allotey Obour, Sempe Mantse who doubles as the Acting Ga Mantse.

Other dignitaries expected to grace the occasion include, Nii Ayi Kumah V, Ako Mantse, Mr Eddie Duplan, Chairman of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association and Mr Moses Foh Amoaning, Acting Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority.
