Why Ghana Want Eagles in Kumasi

A sentimental attachment to the National Stadium, Kumasi, and the guarantee of uproarious support are the reasons why the Ghana Football Association wants the Black Stars to play the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the historic city on March 11.

Sunday Sports Special learnt that there is actually no serious renovation work going on at the Accra Sports Stadium to warrant its closure. The GFA and the players simply want a change of scene and they believe Kumasi is the real place to go.

It was at the Accra Stadium that the Black Stars were humiliated 3-1 by the Lone Star of Liberia only four weeks ago in a World Cup 2002 qualifier, and it was there that the Stars were pummeled 2-0 and nearly eliminated from the Cup of Nations finals by Cote d'Ivoire a year ago.

Foredogs of the Black Stars have over the years condemned the Accra Sports Stadium, because of its small size, and the Lagos-like sophistication of Accrans which see them supporting the visiting team once the home team cannot measure up.

The Kumasi Stadium in Asokwa, is bigger and guarantees unceasing 90 minutes backing for the Black Stars.

Ghanaians also have fond memories of the Kumasi Stadium, where the Black Stars defeated the Eagles 1-0 in a 1992 Nations Cup qualifier on September 2, 1990.

However, it was also at Kumasi that the Black Stars struggled to draw 2-2 with Morocco's Atlas Lions in a 1998 Cup qualifier, and where they were eliminated 1-0 by South Africa in the Nations Cup quarter- finals last year.
