We're Ready for Ghana - Akide

Super Falcons striker, Mercy Akide, says she is ready to destroy Ghana in the Olympic qualifier slated for 31 January, 2004.

Akide, who is based in the United States of America (USA) and also remains Falcons' all time highest goalscorer, remarked over the weekend that she's physically and psychologically prepared for the crunchy tie.

Speaking after leading Falcons to victory over a selected All-Stars team 5-1 last Saturday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, she said Super Falcons' preparations are going on without any hitch and that the team is battle-ready for the Black Queens.

"As far as I am concerned, I know that psychologically and physically, I am ready. My colleagues too are ready. There are some players still expected from America to join those in camp. You can see how prepared we are," said Akide.

The Super Falcons striker, who was the Female Footballer of the Year in 2000, noted that Ghana is no longer a pushover, adding that they will not take anything for granted when they (Falcons) play the Black Queens.

"We have to really prepare because Ghana is not a pushover any more. I personally must prepare very well because most countries want to beat us. Right now, we are not taking anything for granted," Akide assured.

Speaking on professional female football starting next year, Akide said it is a welcome development, especially for upcoming players in the country.

When asked if players were owed camp allowances, she denied, saying the camp had just opened and that she did not expect any player to receive money now.
