Top4: Hearts cruise to the Top

Accra, Jan 25, GNA - Accra Hearts Of Oak Sporting Club on Sunday cruised to the top position of the Coca Cola Top Four Tournament by walloping Dansoman based Liberty Professionals 3-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Hearts now occupy the position with four points and five goals following the 2-1 defeat suffered by the current leaders, Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the hands of King Faisal at the Kumasi Sports Stadium. The defeat of Kotoko now places them at the third spot while Faisal are placed second with four points and three goals.

In the match which saw Hearts cruising to the top, the Phobians dominated the game by combining a lot of experience with much team work right from the blast of the whistle and found the opener in the 28th minute when Lawrence Adjei picked a ball from Dan Quaye to beat keeper Patrick Antwi in goal for Liberty for the goal.

The Phobians became unstoppable after the goal with persistent pressure on the Dansoman boys and no wonder in the 33rd minute, Dissiramah James handled the ball in their vital area in a struggle with Adjei for referee Alex Quartey to whistle for a penalty. Ablade Morgan ably converted the kick for Hearts a minute later to increase Hearts lead to two and he was on hand again to add another one in the 40th minute when he pounced on a through pass from the midfield to fire in the third goal for his side.

Morgan also takes the lead with two goals as the top scorer in the tourney after two matches.

Heartys dependable defender, Dan Quaye who was adjudged player of the match could have crowned it with a goal in the 45th minute but the goal post saved the situation for Liberty as his thunderbolt of a free kick hit the post to end proceedings of the first half. Liberty came back from recess with determination of redeeming their image but having lost the cream of their players to Hearts and Kotoko and the exodus train for greener pasture on the transfer market, the inexperienced lads could not make use of the few chances that came their way.

They found it extremely difficult penetrating the defence of Hearts made up of man of the match Dan Quaye, Kwabena Boafo, Amankwah Mireku and young Louis Agyeman.

Coach Silas Tetteh's decision to introduce Jonathan Quartey, Nii Ayi Alex and Eric Bekoe for Micheal Helegbe, Obeng Darko and Appiah George did not make any impact in the performance of the team.

Hearts remained on top of the game putting their opponents under more pressure but they could not satisfy their fans who were graving for more goals as the last 45 minutes remained barren.

The whole stadium witnessed a thunderous jubilation when news trickled in that the Kumasi match had ended with Asante Kotoko being the vanquished side when the Accra match was left with about 25 more minutes to end.

Hearts could have scored at least two more goals in the latter stages, but their front men made up of Morgan, Adjei and Abdul Samad failed to find the net till the game was brought to an end by FIFA referee Quartey.

Fans of Hearts tooted horns and jubilated over the victory promising hell for Kotoko in their next match at the same venue come next Sunday.
