Tarkwa United still sure of claiming Premier League ticket

Despite the results so far having declared Tarkwa based Wassaman United winners of the ongoing Zone 2 Division One Middle League and thus qualified for next season’s Glo Ghana Premier League, town rivals Tarkwa United insist otherwise. Tarkwa are protesting against Wassaman for allegedly using an unqualified player, striker Isaac Mensah, in their Match Day One duel last Saturday.

Tarkwa recovered from their opening day 3-1 loss to Wassaman to thrash Dunkwa Stars 4-0 on Match Day 2 last Wednesday and are counting on victory from the last fixture tomorrow against Deportivo to give them the final remaining ticket to the 2011/12 Ghana top flight season. According to Tarkwa United Chairman Ahmed Zarouk, the player in question, Isaac Mensah, is their contracted player whom they had given out to Medeama FC, the Premier League side owned by Moses Parker, the same businessman who also owns Wassaman.

A clause in the release letter from Tarkwa United to Medeama indicated that the player was to play for them only in the Glo Ghana Premier League. If not, the player was to revert back to Tarkwa United but Medeama chiefs went against it and have rather deferred the player to Wassaman.

The said Isaac Mensah featured for over 70 minutes for Wassaman against his own Tarkwa United in the 3-1 win which Tarkwa want to be now declared winners of and Wassaman punished with a further 3 points deduction and declared losers too. It is a test case for the Division One League Board as well as the Premier League Board. But Tarkwa bigwigs remain optimistic of winning the protest against Wassaman and consequent promotion to the Ghanaian top flight.

“Our fans should be assured that everything is under control. It’s in God’s hands and we believe we still have a chance so our focus is on winning the last match against Deportivo and we will see what God can do,” Tarkwa United Administrative Manager Robert Quansah stated.
