Satellites to leave for Italy without Wellington

Satellites to leave for Italy without Wellington Newly appointed Satellites coach Orlando Wellington would not be part of the 18-man squad that leaves for Italy on Saturday. The team would be in Europe for a couple of friendlies next week.

Orlando Wellington would not be traveling with the under 20 side despite being appointed as coach of the side days ago. George Afriyie, head of the team’s management committee explained the situation to SuperSport.com. “Wellington is yet to sign his deal with the FA to make his appointment official and it has been decided that until that time he cannot travel with the team.

“It should not be a problem because the people in charge at the moment have been observing the side for some time and know the boys.”

As a result, the Satellites would be handled by Francis Oti Akenten and Yaw Preko.

Speaking on the benefits of the team’s travel abroad, Afriyie said the recent failure of the under 20 side could be attributed to a lack of exposure. “This series of games is important because in the past we identified lack of international exposure as a major problem in FIFA tournaments.”

The Satellites team for Italy would also be made up of players of eighteen years or under. “The qualifying series for the next African Youth Championships starts next year and we want to fall into the age bracket when the tournament comes around,” Afriyie said.
