Rowdyism halts soccer match

Ho, Sept. 11, GNA - The soccer match between Volta and Eastern Regions in the 23rd edition of the Schools and Colleges Sports Festival in Ho on Wednesday ended abruptly at the Mawuli School Park when match officials abandoned the game after recess due to crowd rowdyism.

Mr John K. Boateng, Soccer Co-ordinator of the Schools and Colleges Sports Federation told the GNA Sports that spectators apparently of the host team pelted the referee and his assistants with stones during the match.

He said immediately the Volta team scored the opener in the 24th minute the supporters who rushed onto the field to jubilate hit assistant referee one, Mr Ibrahim Adams from Upper West in the head while assistant referee two, Mr Quedrago Daud from Upper East had his flag seized from him. But was later retrieved.

Mr Boateng said the hooliganism continued till the recess when class one referee Charles Dowouna of Greater Accra and his colleagues abandoned the second half for fear of their lives.

He said the disciplinary committee would meet and study the report to determine the next line of action.

Meanwhile, Central Region has retained both boys and girls table tennis trophies. 11 Sept 03
