Queens fail to halt Falcons again

Warri, Delta State, Nov 12, GNA 96 Ghana's Black Queens on Saturday failed to halt the Super Falcons of Nigeria as they lost 0-1 when both sides clashed in the African Women Championship (AWC) final played at the Warri City Stadium.

The Queens making a fifth attempt at the championship conceded the only goal on 13 minutes in the game that marked the third meeting for both sides at that stage of the competition.

Tournament top scorer Perpetua Nkwocha punished the Ghanaian defence to ensure the Falcons who had qualified alongside the Queens to represent Africa at the next FIFA World Cup slated for the Republic of China in 2007 won the ultimate.

Goalkeeper Gladys Enti made a mess of a shot, which Nkwocha followed up to score the goal that sent the partisan crowd chanting. The Ghanaians struggled to cope with the Nigerians, who were dictating the pace.

Any time the Nigerians broke, the Queens appeared to be difficulty, but the host could not take advantage of their dominance to increase their count till recess.

The Falcons took control once again in the second half, but it was Florence Adutwumwaa who had replaced injured Florence Okoe who had the clearest chance of the day.

Anita Amankwaa who was marked out of the game set Adutwumwaa clear after pacing beyond two markers, only for the player to shoot wide with the yawning net at her mercy.

As the game coasted to the end, goalkeeper Enti pulled crucial saves to ensure the Queens came home with only a goal deficit.
