Prempeh beat Ahmadiyya in SHS competition

Prempeh College, one of Ghana's premier second-cycle institutions, triumphed at the 2013-14 Inter-Schools Soccer Games for Ashanti on Thursday, beating T.I Ahmadiyya 3-1 in what proved a pulsating finale to an exhibition of exciting football enjoyed in the past few days at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The Amanfuor thus reclaim a title they last won in 2005, and doing so in some style, too. En route to the final, Prempeh dispatched the likes of Islamic SHS, Ejisuman, and Manso Adubia SHS with consummate ease in the earlier rounds, before getting the better of 'Amass' - themselves past winners of the competition and coached by current King Faisal deputy trainer Sabuto Prince Acheampong - in the final.

With the teams tied at a goal each at the interval, Prempeh came back stronger in the second half, killing off what had until then been a fairly balanced encounter with two well-taken strikes through No.10-shirted Abass, who thus sealed a thoroughly deserved hat-trick for himself on the day.

The man-of-the-match honours, though, went to Abass' team-mate McCarthy who was also adjudged overall best player at the tournament.

Long established as an academic institution of great repute, Prempeh - where ex-Kotoko star Yusif Chibsah and former Black Meteors skipper Edmund Owusu Ansah, among others, were groomed - had experienced a lull of sorts in the sporting disciplines in recent years and would hope this conquest precipitates success in that sphere once more. The college would now prepare to represent Ashanti at the national version of the football competition.

Earlier in the day, Agona Sec/Tech had beaten Manso Adubia via a shootout in the third-place match to secure bronze.
