Owusu Threatens To Quit

Ghanaian striker George Owusu's marriage with Caps United, the club that brought him to Zimbabwe, appears to have come to an unceremonious end after irreconcilable differences emerged between the two parties.

As Owusu made threats to leave the club if it did not give him a contract, Caps United prepared to off load the player.

Owusu told The Standard that he was disheartened at the way the former league champions were treating him and would leave if the ill- treatment continued.

Owusu said Caps United was not a club that cared about the welfare of its players. The Ghanaian charged that the club was forcing him to play without a contract, a situation he finds untenable.

As a result of the impasse between Owusu and Caps United, the striker has failed to feature in any of the pharmaceutical side's matches this season. He has insisted that he will only play after he has signed a contract.

"I have told them that I need a contract first. Without a contract, I will not play for the team. I can't just play for nothing and I have made this clear in my meetings with the chairman of the club. Have you ever seen anyone who just goes into the pitch to play professional soccer without knowing how much he will get at the end of the match? That is ridiculous. I can't play before negotiating a contract," said the talented striker.

He said the meetings he had held with club chairman, Andy Hodges, had failed to yield any meaningful results. What had emerged, he said, were threats to suspend him if he continued to refuse to play.

In his response to Owusu's claims, Hodges said since the player did not feature in Caps United's plans, he was free to join any team of his choice.

"He can go and join any other team. Any team that is willing to take him can negotiate with him. He is no longer wanted at Caps United and he can also talk to any newspaper he wants but that will only make it worse for him. We have actually decided to transfer-list him," said Hodges.

Owusu said he was giving the club until this week to resolve the impasse before seeking a new club.

"Hodges threatened to suspend me if I don't start playing but I need a contract first and then I will play. No problem. I will not submit to threats. If they don't decide, then I will make the decision to move. I don't think Caps is a bad team, it just has to be more open and more caring. I have played for them for two or three years and I have enjoyed those years," said the former Dynamos striker. No teams have as yet approached him. Although he is willing to consider serious offers from any club, he is particularly interested in joining the Cup Kings, Dynamos.

Owusu described Dynamos as the best team in the country saying the peak of his career was when he played for these former Caf champions league finalists.

"Dynamos is a big team and its style of play is good. I wanted to renew my contract with Dynamos, but Caps (United) refused. I played my best football when I was at Dynamos and if I am to approach any team, it will be Dynamos. At Dynamos you can be seen easily. It is just like playing in Ghana where there are scouts everywhere and your chances of playing international soccer are high," said Owusu.

Owusu was part of the Dynamos team which reached the mini league stage of the 1999 Caf Champions League.
