Originator of the FIFA golden goal rule John Amoah continues to suggest changes to the game with his latest being the extra time rule, insisting it must be altered.

Amoah, a Ghanaian football researcher argues that the 'Golden Goal' must be reintroduced into the game with major changes to the extra time to add to the beauty of the game.

As a football researcher with over 30 years experience, Amoah called for the abolishing of penalty kicks after extra time to determine match results a few weeks ago, calling a point system to determine winners.

His latest suggestion is an alteration in the extra time rule.

Amoah insists that football is played because of results and that playing additional 30 minutes after the expiration of regulation time must take a new format where teams reduce their number of players to increase the excitement of the game making it more competitive.

According to him, the game must get tougher and more competitive as it progresses. As a result the teams involved after the 90 minutes must reduce their number of players from 11 aside to 7 aside each for the first half of the extra time with the four players reduced coming on board to play the second half if no goal is still realised.

“The extra time rule must be altered. We need to make football more natural and livelier. If after the 90 minutes no goal is scored and the game must go into extra time, then the teams must reduce their number of players,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com

“The eleven players must be reduced to seven for each team to play a seven aside. If no goal comes after the first half of the extra time, the four players substituted come on to replace four in the team to play the second half.”

“If this suggestion is taken, it will increase the competitiveness of the game and the better side will win,” he noted.

He argued further that the golden goal was not properly implemented by FIFA hence its premature death.

“If FIFA had implemented the golden goal rule well, this is where it will be useful. If teams will play penalty shootouts after the 30 mins extra time, then that period has been useless. Why not play the penalties after the 90 minutes regulation time? He queried.

“But if the number of players in the extra time is reduced, it will make the game tougher and the best team wins. The game must be tougher as teams progress.”

John Amoah, famously known as ‘Mr. Golden Goal’ is of the view that football must be natural and games must be won on fair grounds.
