Nyantakyi supports Appiah's decision on Asamoah

President of the Ghana Football Association [GFA], Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah’s idea of using midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah as a defender during the Ghana-USA FIFA World Cup opener on Thursday.

According to him, the Juventus playmaker was his “man of the match” during Ghana’s painful defeat to the United States of America.

He noted that, despite the player’s unhappiness to operate from defence, he [Kwadwo Asamoah] was excellent from the left-full back role.

After being deployed at the left back for Ghana’s Group G clash against USA, gifted Asamoah said he would prefer being played in an offensive midfield role where his talent would be better utilised by the Black Stars’.

“Everybody knows where I perform best. I have never enjoyed playing at the back but when you are asked to step in what can you do? He told an Accra-based FM Station after last Monday’s 1-2 loss to the USA.

But in an interview with Asempa Sports, the GFA boss opined that, he will be glad if the coach maintained Kwadwo Asamoah at the defence.

He believes that, there are roles in the team that needs to be look at to strengthen the team ahead of the Germany clash.

“Kwadwo Asamoah was the player during the USA match. He should not be changed. The position he played was solid. The coach should rather look at positions that need to be fortified rather than changing Asamoah from defence,” he said.
