Nigeria's Lobi Stars seek spiritual help

LAGOS, Nigeria (October 13, 2000 12:40 p.m. EDT www.sportserver.com) - Nigeria's Lobi Stars have visited a controversial evangelical church to pray for victory in its CAF Champions League match this weekend against Ghana's Accra Hearts of Oak.

"The whole team visited The Synagogue for spiritual guidance against Hearts. We believe in God and we believe God is on our side," team official Mike Idoko said Friday.

The Synagogue, a highly profitable church in one of Lagos' sprawling suburbs, has been a refuge for several injured and troubled top Nigerian sports stars.

Recently former Super Eagles captain Daniel Amokachi visited the church to treat a nagging knee injury. He claimed he was healed.

Lobi lost 3-0 at home to Hearts in the first round of the lucrative CAF Champions League and are to play in Ghana at the weekend.

It is currently third in the four-team Group B of the competition with three points from as many games.

Ghanaian champions Hearts top the table with nine points from three matches while Al Ahly of Egypt are on four points.
