LG Tournament: Ghana, Iran stranded in Lagos

Teams participating in the L.G. Electronics Tournament, which begins today in Abuja, were stranded in Lagos yesterday following the limited flight services imposed on the nation because of President Obasanjo’s inauguration ceremony.

The teams, Iran, Ghana and some members of the Super Eagles could not transit to Abuja on arriving Lagos because flight services were reduced to the barest minimum on instruction from the Presidency.

The move, which was part of the security measures to curtail any incidences of mass protest against the inauguration, halted several flight arrangements within the country.

Officials of the NFA and the sponsors L.G. Electronics, who were at the Sheraton Hotels to receive the teams waited in vain as the players would not secure flights to Abuja.

But the sponsors and the NFA chieftains were optimistic the hazy coast would be cleared latest by midnight to allow the players travel to Abuja for their matches later in the day.

Meanwhile, accreditation of officials and pressmen and few home-based players who made the trip to Abuja by road was done yesterday.

The matches billed for 4:30p.m. and 6:30p.m. are free for the public who are however required to obtain entry tickets at the designated gates.
