Kwesi Appiah hopeful that Waris injury is not serious

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah hopes striker Abdul Majeed Waris is not ruled out of the World Cup after he limped off with a thigh injury during Monday’s final pre-World Cup friendly 4-0 win over South Korea in Miami.

The Spartak Moscow striker landed awkwardly after surviving a clumsy double-footed sliding tackle on four minutes.

Two members of Ghana’s medical team led the 22-year-old off the pitch into the dressing room.

Waris will undergo tests to determine if he will be fit for Ghana’s Group G opener against USA next week or for the rest of the group stage matches.

Appiah said: “He is one of our top players. Unfortunately he had an injury. The doctors are still working on him. I mean I’m hoping to get the results of the extent of the injury in two/three hours time.

”At the moment, I haven’t had any information yet. I hope he recovers to join the team.”

Waris is one of Ghana’s in-form players after netting nine goals in 16 appearances for second half of the season on loan at French Ligue 1 side Valenciennes.
